How to read a Lidl receipt
App coupons come off at the till, so the lines overstate the total.
Lidl sits between the two models. There is no permanent member price on the shelf, but Lidl Plus issues app coupons that come off at the till, so a scanned app changes the total after the items have rung up.
Why the lines overstate the total
Coupon discounts are applied beneath the item lines. Summing the items gives a number higher than you paid, sometimes by a lot, and the gap is not distributed evenly across the basket. Whichever items the coupons applied to are the ones that actually cost less.
That gap between shelf price and what you were charged is the reason a receipt is worth reading at all. A card statement records one total for the shop. Only the receipt records which lines were discounted and by how much, which is what reading a receipt properly is for.
The codes
Every UK receipt prints a key at the foot explaining its own letter or symbol codes, and it is the only reliable guide to that receipt. The codes are not standardised between retailers and they change.
